Science and Engineering in the Elementary Classroom
Introducing science and engineering in the early grades helps students build curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills. Research shows that students who experience strong science instruction before 5th grade are more likely to see themselves as capable in STEM and stay engaged in it over time. With 80% of future careers expected to need STEM skills—and only 38% of 4th graders nationwide are currently scoring at or above proficient in science(1)—early science and engineering experiences are more important than ever.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are designed to help all students make sense of the world around them through three-dimensional learning. That means students don’t just learn science facts—they actively do science and engineering by engaging in investigations, asking questions, designing solutions, and using evidence to explain real-world phenomena.
